SOLD: Beche Wood £50,500 Freehold

  • near Fettercairn, Laurencekirk, South Aberdeenshire
  • over 8 ¾ acres
  • Northern Scotland

Description: Beche Wood is a very attractive mixed woodland with direct road frontage and is made up of two distinct habitats. The western area comprises mature Scots pine trees planted over 75 years ago, which were recently thinned to aid the growth of their girth and this has also resulted in the attractive and successful regeneration of mixed broadleaves in the understory below. The eastern section, by contrast, has a boundary of mature veteran beech trees in front of recently planted spruce. These softwoods are intermingled with the natural regeneration of native broad leaves such as sycamore and ash, as well as some other varied conifers.

A number of woodland paths have been made, as well as two bridges to cross one of the drainage channels that bisect this section of level woodland. The ditches in particular, create a wood with a striking ecological diversity, and the scope for increasing the water habitats is extensive. The trees are young enough to allow plenty of light to penetrate to the forest floor and the drainage lines create a haven for various damp loving mosses, such as sphagnum and wild flowers including foxglove and heather.

At this stage of the woods development, the trees are of a manageable size for the prospective woodlander who has limited experience of managing larger woods. In the coming years this woodland has great potential to provide a steady and sustainable supply of firewood.

Access: is off the B97 and it has its own private entrance with a metal gate.

Sporting Rights: These are owned and included with the land.

Special Rights/Wayleaves: a right is reserved for the benefit of the retained land to clean the main ditch along the southern boundary.

Thornton Woodlands which Beche Wood is part of, are situated in idyllic, historic and very peaceful rural surroundings. The trees are a diverse mixture of species and ages and have been sympathetically managed. Currently mature Scots pine, young spruce and birch are dominant, but there are significant areas of mixed broad leaves including oak and alder. Red squirrels, deer, hare with lots of small mammals and birds including woodpecker inhabit the woods. There are grants for encouraging capercaille which occupied the area until recent times.

Surrounding Area: Nearby are the tourist villages of Edzell, with its hidden "rocks of solitude" walk along the North Esk river, and Fettercairn with its working distillery. Slightly further afield are Glamis Castle and Lunan Bay beach and the fishing towns of Montrose and Arbroath. Dundee and Aberdeen are each approximately 35 mins drive.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
