Bridie Wood, West Lothian - Just over 5 acres, £39,000

Bridie Wood

Bridie Wood is a young but exceptional woodland, set in beautiful rolling countryside and yet conveniently accessible from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

It is bounded on two sides by hedges, dense beech along the roadside and older hawthorn along the field boundary that could take some additional planting, perhaps of a more diverse stock, and some laying in the future. A conservation mix of hedge plants would do best incorporating blackthorn, field maple, hazel, gelder rose and additional hawthorn. These wildlife corridors are hugely important for both flora and fauna and will add to what is an already impressive list of tree species within the wood.

A very scenic burn runs along the northern boundary, this being the natural place to gravitate towards, especially for the siting of a woodland shelter.

An interesting aspect to the woods at Drumtassie are the pipeline wayleaves that dissect the wider woodland, providing open grassy areas that would be ideal for managing and promoting the restoration of traditional wild meadow land, greatly enriching the environmental value of the Bridie Wood. Diversity is the cornerstone to a good woodland and will encourage a wide variety insects, butterflies and larger mammals: good meadow land has been in decline across the country and any opportunity to redress this balance would be of greta benefit to the wider environment..

The trees, having grown well, are at a good stage for selective thinning and will provide a steady supply of good quality firewood for many years, as well as providing a wonderful backdrop for kids to explore, play and create in.

Surrounding Area:

The woods at Drumtassie lie closest to the small village of Avonbridge, its Gaelic name being Drochaid Abhainne quite literally 'bridge of the river'. Early history suggests that the river was forded here by cattle drovers coming south and later the village was home to a brickworks and a small open cast mine. Further afield lies the small town of Armadale another mining town with the land being rich in coal and ironstone.

The woods are within easy reach of Stirling , Glasgow and Edinburgh and lie within the county of West Lothian.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
