SOLD: Corsine Wood £59,000 Freehold

Description

There is a great majesty to the woods at Millbank; mature trees are prolific throughout this woodland; its long history as a woodland is easily apparent. Corsine Wood is of a size where it is easy to lose oneself, though with plenty of open clearings suitable for camping or the siting of a woodland shelter. Comprising of a really well balanced mix of conifer and deciduous trees, it is very pleasing on the eye indeed, and an afternoon spent walking in these woods will be time well spent. It really is a woodland for all seasons and will provide the backdrop for many micro adventures for young and old.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.

Trees

There are a wide variety of trees ranging from mature Scots pine and larch, to birch and rowan, the latter being said in folklore to protect from wayward spirits. Recent winter blows have brought a couple down but these will provide a convenient store of firewood.

Wildlife

Taken as a whole, it is a large area of woodland covered by Millbank, along the neighbouring Scare Wood, supporting the free flow of wildlife. This large range of woodland habitat provides a healthy balance of wildlife both small and large. Time spent in the woods, observing, will provide an interesting idea of its variety and make up. Fairly cheap trail cams are becoming available, that will allow observation of the comings and goings from the comfort of the home.

Features

Corsine Wood is set back above the old quarry works, providing great views above the canopy. Though the quarry is outwith Corsine Wood, the nearby cliff edge is steep and care must be taken: it would be advisable to supervise youngsters. Close to the entrance of the wood, a small bench has been constructed to allow time to sit and soak up the rich atmosphere.

Access, tracks and footpaths

There is an excellent stone track leading up to the woods with two stoney areas of hardstanding for vehicle turning or use as a timber stacking area. A pedestrian track runs through the wood close to the quarry.

Rights and covenants

All sporting rights are sold with the woodland.

Activities

There is great scope for any number of woodland activities from den making to green wood working, or simply just being in the woods to escape the frenetic pace of modern life: the list is as long as the imagination.

Local area and history

The surrounding area is steeped in history with the close proximity of Castle Fraser and Cluny Castle, both fine examples of 16th century architecture, though the core of Castle Fraser dates back to the 1450s. Craigievar Castle in nearby Alford, a pink castle supposedly the inspiration for Walt Disney, is another local attraction as well as the Loch of Skene: the loch supports concentrations of wildfowl in autumn and winter in particular greylag geese, goldeneye ducks and pink-footed geese. From here it is a short hop to the Cairngorm National Park, arguably the heart of Scotland in many ways.
