Elm Tree Wood, Aberdeenshire - About 3 acres, £29,500

Elm Tree Wood
Elm Tree Wood
Aberdeenshire

A wonderfully diverse deciduous woodland with a stream and river frontage.

Elm Tree Wood as the name suggests is home to some fine mature specimens of elm tree that have thankfully managed to survive the ravages of Dutch elm disease. The north east has been known as one of the last redoubts for what was a very common native tree inhabiting the length and breadth of Britain. Over the last fifty years the disease has inexorably spread northwards laying waste to about 60 million trees, though the cooler Scottish climate has prevailed here.

This little corner of Aberdeenshire is a truly lovely place and this quirky little woodland sits well in the landscape. It is in the shape of a horseshoe and has a remarkably diverse mix of tree species with fine examples of oak, ash, beech, elm, sycamore, holly and birch. There is good access off the adjoining B road and it sits snugly between the villages of Forgue and Inverkeithny.

A real point of interest is the frontage onto a good sized burn that feeds the nearby Glendronach distillery that was founded in 1826; this burn will be ideal for splashing about in on warm summer days. There is a smaller stream also, that meanders through the wood and itself feeds the larger burn.

Towards the bottom of the wood lies an ideal flat area that would be perfect for camping or for the siting of a suitable woodland shelter. Woodlands are proven to be good for mind, body and soul and this wood is no exception and will fit the bill perfectly.

Surrounding Area

The woods are well placed for exploring the surrounding area with the beautiful towns of Banchory, Ballater and Braemar to the south and the stunning countryside of Deeside . The Cairngorm National Park is within striking distance as well as many small fishing villages to the north. Huntley is the closest large town offering all the amenities of civilisation.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
