Wivven Wood, Aberdeenshire - Nearly 7 ¼ acres, £49,000

Wivven Wood
Wivven Wood
Aberdeenshire

A spectacular mature woodland set along the eastern approaches to the Cairngorms National Park.

Wivven Wood is a remarkably diverse woodland; a fine mix of mature trees, well spaced with a vibrant understory. It sits within the heart of Millbank Woods, a block of woodland of about 80 acres which itself sits next to a larger block of woodland, commonly known as Scare Wood, that is presently owned by the Forestry Commission. Mature pine trees create a sense of grandeur, security and shelter, while younger birch creates privacy and seclusion at ground level. Wandering through the trees leads to the discovery of numerous pleasant glades and the bilberry that is prolific creates a verdant green back drop as well as a plentiful supply of berries in late summer.

This wonderful backdrop will provide great inspiration for the budding woodland owner both as a source of sustainable firewood and as a place to just come and spend time in. Time spent in contemplation of a woodland, is time very well spent. A forestry hut would be a very useful addition and easily accommodated within Wivven Wood The linked video below gives a very good insight to the general feel of these beautiful woodlands.

An important aspect of woodland ownership is the sense of community that can develop within a woodland through shared experiences and sometimes, shared labour. The woods at Millbank will prove to be no exception as more and more woodlanders take the first steps into new ventures. An excellent hard stone track has been renewed with the exceptional granite found within the woodland.

Wivven Wood is a woodland for all seasons, whether it be wild flowers in spring and summer, mushrooms in late summer and autumn or firewood harvesting in winter, there will always be something of interest to do. At over 7 acres this is a good sized woodland with a real sense of scale and early viewing is recommended.

The surrounding area is steeped in history with the close proximity of Castle Fraser and Cluny Castle, both fine examples of 16th century architecture, though the core of Castle Fraser dates back to the 1450s. Craigievar Castle in nearby Alford, a pink castle supposedly the inspiration for Walt Disney, is another local attraction as well as the Loch of Skene: the loch supports concentrations of wildfowl in autumn and winter in particular greylag geese, goldeneye ducks and pink-footed geese.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
