Cheyney Wood - SOLD, West Sussex - About 6 acres, £75,000

Cheyney Wood - SOLD

Some woods are very open, but in contrast, Cheyney Wood is packed with interest and perfect for exploring at all levels. Mature oak is the backbone, spread throughout along with the chestnut coppice below. Look up through the chestnut and birch to see the large-limbed king of trees high above. Access is from the private track at the centre, walk down the slope through the wood to the small seasonal stream forming the western boundary. About 20 years ago some of the oak was harvested, most of the limbs were left in the wood and now provide a considerable store of dried firewood.

The whole forested area at Tortington is designated as a SNCI (site of nature conservation interest) and the description (citation) and map can be seen by clicking HERE SNCI. This describes some of the nature found in Cheyney Wood which is classified as ancient and semi-natural woodland. Many of the woodland flowers typical of ancient woodland are found here. There is also holly which provides shelter, privacy and cover throughout the year. This area is also part of the South Downs National Park, designated because of its special landscape and wildlife quality.

Nearby is the site of the medieval Augustinian priory and its associated church with an ancient chancel arch and doorway showing remarkable carvings with "grotesque, boggle-eyed monsters", rare beakhead figures and chevron ornamentation. Ellis de Cheyney acquired the Tortington manor in 1295 - it having been a 'gift' by William the Conqueror to Earl Roger de Montgomery. Subsequently passing through several families, the lands, farms and priory ruins were taken over in the late 1800s by the Duke of Norfolk for his Arundel Estate.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
