Jupp Wood - SOLD, West Sussex - About 6⅓ acres, £69,000

Jupp Wood - SOLD

Yew trees are rather special, click here for our link to the yew tree, and there are some three or four specimens within Jupp Wood. With dense wide-spreading branches the ground below is kept clear and open. Larch is the main tree of the wood, a deciduous conifer with bright green needles which become deep green in summer and then turn to yellow and red in the autumn. Larch is a useful timber being durable and straight-grained and could supply an owner with plenty of poles or planks. Removing some of the larch will have the added benefit of favouring the co-planted oaks. These oaks have been 'drawn up' in competition with the larch, and taking a few stems from around the oaks will allow them to widen their canopy and grow in width as well as height. The yew trees would also 'appreciate' removal of competing larch where their branches intermingle.

The whole forested area is designated as a SNCI (site of nature conservation interest) the description (citation) and map, can be seen by clicking HERE SNCI. This describes some of the nature found in Jupp Wood which is classified as PAWS (plantation on ancient woodland site), some of the woodland flowers typical of ancient woodland are found here. There is also rhododendron which provides shelter, privacy and cover throughout the year. This area is also part of the South Downs National Park, designated because of its special landscape and wildlife quality.

The soils are sandy, and in the 16th century this area was described as grazed open heathland covered by heathers but by the 18th century it was recorded as being woodland. Nearby is the site of the medieval Augustinian priory and these woods would have been within their curtilage.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
