Short Wood - SOLD, Hants - About 3½ acres, £55,000

Short Wood - SOLD

Short Wood is part of a well-managed former estate woodland, all the trees have been thinned and are now evenly spaced and will show excellent growth as they increase in diameter. Their age can be estimated by looking at the cut edge on the ridestop posts and counting the rings. Follow the track up from the ridestop to the clearing and sit a while on the bench - assuming the local wildlife haven't used it as a feeding station - here is a good place to camp and listen to the tawny owls hooting messages across the valley. A mown path extends up and around the hillside.

Lots of wildflowers can be seen, with bluebells and the wood sorrel hugging the forest floor and finding homes on old tree stumps. Above this, natural regeneration of the next cohort of trees is evident mixed in with the hazel and other shrubs. The forest floor is rich with seeds and seedlings.

Classified as Ancient Replanted woodland, Short Wood is located in the South Downs National Park.

The Domesday book refers to Farringdon as Feredone which, when translated, is a fern-covered hillside; much of Short Wood is fern-covered. The most notable local, Gilbert White, was one of the first really to study ecology, and his calendar from 1795 is a valuable reference point. He may well have walked the woodlands here. Jane Austen was a local resident probably enjoyed Short Wood.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
