Finke Wood, Renfrewshire - 0.5 acres, £6,750

Finke Wood

Nestling in the grounds of Gryffe Castle, Finke Wood gives great credence to the expression “small is beautiful”. Notwithstanding its size, the wood contains an astounding variety of tree species.

Formerly part of the gardens of the castle the wood is a haven of peace and tranquillity. The wood is bounded by a well-kept beech and hawthorn hedge to the west, a fringe of rosa rugosa and hazel to the north and rhododendron bushes to the east.

Although mainly broadleaf, three giant western hemlock corner the wood and a close look within reveals a couple of Scots pine. Several other giants of the wood are present namely sycamore, lime and horse chestnut. In the heart of the wood both holly and rowan have grown to a large proportion, way above their normal stature as understorey species.

On the woodland floor, the early seasons are marked by the successive flowering of daffodils, bluebells and redcurrant. Not to be outdone, trees also add blossom from apple, cherry, hawthorn and elder.

As might be expected the wood is a haven for the local wildlife. Deer and red squirrel are frequently seen within and around the trees. A large variety of small birds also find refuge here, amongst them several finches from which the wood takes its name. Finke is the German word for the finch.

Tree species list; Hornbeam, Sycamore, Rowan, Birch, Beech, Horse Chestnut, Scots Pine, Western Hemlock, Bird Cherry, Flowering Cherry, Ash, Lime, Holly, Hawthorn, Elder, Apple.

Local area; A largely rural area with scattered farmsteads and pasture. The nearby town of Bridge of Weir is not without charm and boasts many fine Victorian and Edwardian residences. Built when the arrival of the railway enabled wealthy business people from Glasgow to easily commute. Long closed, the railway is now a popular cycle route (75) connecting Leith in east Edinburgh with Portavadie on the Cowall Peninsula in Argyll, via Glasgow and using the ferry between Gourock and Dunoon.

Access: A private tarmac road leads off the A761 up to and past the wood ending at two parking areas. A full right of access exists over the road and parking is permitted in the bays marked with a V.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
