Haar Wood - SOLD, East Lothian - Nearly 4 ¼ acres, £39,000

Haar Wood - SOLD

Nestling on the periphery of a conifer plantation, Haar Wood is genuinely unique woodland. The predominant tree species are oak and sweet chestnut. Rare to be found this far north, the chestnut here obviously sets viable seeds as it is evenly distributed throughout the woodland. Rubbing shoulders with the mighty oak, the pair create an interesting and unusual wood.

Historic harvesting of the oak, evidenced by stumps of impressive girth, has allowed in light and given space for pioneering species such as birch and willow to also become established. Seed set from these trees has resulted in an abundance of saplings which help to create a considerable and varied understorey. This is supplemented by the occasional sycamore, ash and rowan. The open areas and fringes of the wood are well-populated by a large variety of woodland flowers. These are in turn supplemented by ferns, bilberry and bramble.

The southern boundary of the wood is marked by a dry stane dyke. In between runs a water channel created to drain away to the east. Its gentle flow attracts damp loving plants such as meadow sweet and soft rush and is an excellent breeding ground for native amphibians.

Moving towards the east, the character of the wood changes as the broadleaves are replaced by a stand of Sitka and Norway spruce. Of equal stature to their deciduous cousins nearby, they add further variety to the wood. Vigorous thinning in this area has left a carpet of brash and birch poles which, as they rot down, will provide an excellent opportunity for fungi to thrive.

A large variety of small birds take advantage of the generous cover and abundant food supply. Tits and finches move from bough to bough whilst beneath, the almost mouse-like wren carries out its endless search for food. Numerous well-marked trails weave through the wood, a highway indeed for nocturnally foraging badger and roe.

A mere ten miles from the coast, the local area is often inundated by an ethereal Haar. This drifting sea fret drips from the trees, giving at times an almost rainforest atmosphere appearance to the woods.

The land slopes gently to the south and the Lammamuir hills with their excellent walking and cycle tracks are a tantalising glimpse upon the horizon. At various points throughout the wood, there is a pleasant aspect over the surrounding undulating farmland.

The nearby historic market town of Gifford is well served by cafes, accommodation and a small general grocery store. This is also the location of Yester Castle, once the home of the Norman, Hugo de Giffard who was granted the surrounding lands

Although the local area is largely agricultural, several industries were previously centred here. A sizeable textile industry producing fine linen, and a paper mill which once supplied bank notes for the Scottish banks, are the most notable.

A viewing of the wood is definitely recommended; please allow yourself a generous amount of time to fully explore the wood throughout.

Sporting rights: these are owned and included with the land.

Access: is off the B6355 and then along the firm stone track which is accessible by most cars.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
