Howden Wood - SOLD, Borders - Nearly 2 acres, £25,000

Howden Wood - SOLD

Howden Wood is named after the eponymous burn which runs along the southern boundary. The woodland is mainly comprised of mixed broadleaves in two areas: the very useful areas of level ground beside the burn and up along the north western section of the woodland, where a mature beech hedge shelters the woodland from the minor road leading to the historic town of Jedburgh. The overall aspect of the woodland allows light to penetrate to the south facing slope that helps encourage greater diversity of fauna species.

It is easy to relax in the woodland with the plentiful trees, the burn, the general topography and dense hedge all contribute to peaceful solitude; isolation from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. A sprinkling of cheerful small birds and the sighting of the occasional small mammal going about its business enhances the sense of peace from just being in the woods.

For the more adventurous soul, the woodland provides opportunities to enhance the environment. As the trees mature they will provide a valuable source of firewood or materials for crafting projects. The already rich range of trees can be further diversified to replace those that have been provided by nature. Such actions will be a boost to the improving the diversity of a part of the Scottish Borders, which was once a great forest.

The Jedforest was once heavily wooded in the past. An historic oak known as the Capon Tree is a mighty example that can be found several miles away and dates back to Roman times. Celtic settlers first made Jedburgh (or Gedwearde as they called it) home 1,162 years ago with the impressively large abbey being built 878 years ago. This is just a small snippet of the history of the town which has a rich history: which other town do you know that has 83 different versions of its name?

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
