Lye Wood - SOLD, East Lothian - Over 3 ¾ acres , £39,000

Lye Wood - SOLD

Forming a part of the larger and long established Bolton Muir Woods, Lye Wood is an interesting and varied woodland. From the ride stop entrance one immediately plunges into the heart of the wood: dense regeneration gives an immediate sense of privacy and seclusion. Broadleaf replanting has been supplemented by natural regeneration to wonderful effect. Willow, rowan, birch and ash supplement oak and cherry. Young conifers such as spruce and western red cedar are a welcome splash of green when autumn leaves are falling, leaving other branches bare.

Two newly cut pathways lead onwards to an open area populated by more mature spruce and pine. A rustic bench has been crafted to facilitate restful appreciation of the woodland scene. Mosses and grasses carpet the floor with woodrush and sorrel supplementing the verdant carpet. The fringes and verges of the wood host a seasonal succession of woodland flowers. Orchids, wild strawberry, birdsfoot trefoil and the ubiquitous foxglove to name but a few.

Deer and badger tracks meander through the trees crossing several drainage channels in the process, each supporting their own microcosm of aquatic life. Finches and tits flit through the understory, whilst woodpeckers hammer at standing deadwood and the occasional woodcock burst from cover if disturbed.

Lye Wood is an ideal place to get involved in a woodland of your very own. Whether your interest is in conservation, nature watching or maybe a sustainable source of firewood this is an ideal location. An overnight camping stopover would be an excellent opportunity to spend time under the stars, immersing yourself in nature and observing the nocturnal life of the wood.

The picturesque village of Gifford is nearby and sits astride the Gifford Water. It dates from the 17th century and was built to replace the village of Bothans, which housed agricultural workers from the estate. This was demolished to make way for a walled park around Yester House. Despite its agricultural tradition, the village housed industry as well. A thriving linen industry harnessed the energy from the river to manufacture fine textiles. Lye is a solution of wood ash and soap in which the cloth was boiled, usually overnight. This was part of the process to achieve high quality pure white linen.

Beyond the village are the Lammamuir hills which overlook the landscape below. Home to numerous excellent walking and cycle tracks they are well worth a visit. The Pencaitland Railway Walk which starts in Gifford offers wonderful views of parts of East Lothian that are inaccessible by car. The trees and hedgerows along the route offer shelter to a great diversity of wildlife and many rare wildflowers are established along the embankments.

A viewing of the wood is definitely recommended; please allow yourself a generous amount of time to fully explore the wood throughout.

Sporting rights: these are owned and included with the land.

Access: is off the B6355 and then along the firm stone track which is accessible by most cars.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
