Coed Dinas - Dinas Wood, Carmarthenshire - Over 6 acres, £35,000

Coed Dinas - Dinas Wood

Coed Dinas is located near to the village of Trelech in Carmarthenshire. It was planted in 1993 and 1994 under the Farm Woodland Premium Scheme. This woodland comprises of a mixture of Japanese larch and oak, ash and beech. There are some impressively large oaks which tower above the rest. The woodland is bordered by woodland, farmland and a river.

Coed Dinas has lots of open spaces where the sunlight penetrates the canopy giving rise to pretty, common woodland flowers like great willowherb and red campion. Ferns and mosses litter the woodland floor, providing perfect habitat for fungus species in late summer and early autumn. Areas of dense western gorse and common bramble provide food and shelter to many woodland species. Animal paths are evident throughout the woodland and there is evidence of rabbit and badger activity. This woodland would be perfect for wildlife watching.

South of the track, the woodland slopes gently down and adjoins a river, the Afon Cynin. Here you will find a mixture of young deciduous trees, mainly oak, ash and beech, and good flat access to the river. The river is fairly shallow with a sand/pebble riverbed. Some of the area by the river is boggy wetland providing habitat for amphibians and watervoles (which have been seen at Allt Fynnon Wen). There are also dry flat areas which would be perfect for a camping or fishing area. A simple ladder and a set of steps have been built to provide access to this area by the river, but these could easily be widened and improved.

Access to the woodland is via a locked gated entrance. (Woodland owners are provided with keys but if you are viewing you will have to leave your car in the parking area at this locked gate). The track inside the gate is accessible by ordinary cars as far as the largish parking area with room for 3-4 cars. From this point there is a good stone track recommended only for four wheel drive vehicles. Once you get into Coed Dinas itself, a parking area/turning circle has been created at the far end of the track which runs through the wood.

Coed Dinas makes up part of a larger woodland known as Allt Fynnon Wen. Parts of Allt Fynnon Wen are classified as Ancient Woodland containing oak, silver birch and hazel. The track through the woodland was previously a well trodden route used by miners to access local mines. You can still see the relics of an old pub built to cater for miners on their way home. Trelech, a quiet rural village located less than 2 miles away has public transport links. Trelech is located about 12 miles northwest of Carmarthen, the oldest town in Wales. It is also 9 miles from Newcastle Emlyn, a historic market town.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
