Coed Nant Y Gro (Gravel Stream Wood), Carmarthenshire - 4 acres, £29,000

Coed Nant Y Gro (Gravel Stream Wood)

A lovely little woodland sitting at the confluence of two streams. One, known as the Nant y Gro whose meandering route forms the northern boundary of the woodland, is fairly substantial, and in places has carved itself a deep gully though the land. The stream running through the western part of the woodland and forming the southern half of its western boundary, is as yet unnamed, and its wide sandy banks in parts are perfect for paddling or launching boats (tiny ones).

A good sized stoned parking area, room enough for a camper van, is located in the wood's northwestern corner. A short hop from here brings you to a rustic bridge, constructed using oak from the woodland, which crosses the stream and brings you into the main body of Coed Nant y Gro.

There is a mix of broadleaf, some lovely mature specimens of oak, birch, beech and a healthy understorey of bird and beastie friendly hazel, holly and alder as well as young saplings of oak and beech. Underfoot are many different mosses, as well as emerging green spears of spring flowers.

A power line that runs from south to north east means that growth beneath it, in this case mainly alder, has to be coppiced or kept cut back. As well as allowing light into the centre of the woodland, encouraging wildflower growth and butterfly profusion along the length of the ride, this is also a potential resource of timber or firewood. Alder has amazing rot resistant properties if used for constructing structures that remain wet or submerged; most of Venice is built on alder pilings.

The southern boundary with its neighbouring woodland is formed by an old earth bank, with some lovely old growth and well established oak. Altogether a diverse and vibrant woodland with much potential for both forestry and recreational use.

Coed Nant y Gro is only a mile from the village of Trimsaran, 5 miles from Pembrey Country Park and around 6 miles from Llanelli.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
