Gelli Hill Wood - SOLD, Pembrokeshire - Nearly 4 ½ acres , £29,000

Gelli Hill Wood - SOLD

Gelli Hill Wood is part of a larger planted area of woodland known as Drim Wood located in the village of Gelli. Much of Drim Wood is now owned by a variety of people, including families and couples, and there is a real sense of community forming.

Entering the woodland from the track takes you up a footpath to a large clearing which is perfect for camping or a woodwork area. Young oak saplings can be found scattered around this clearing, alongside the conifer standards. The woodland floor surrounding the clearing is dominated by bramble, providing berries for numerous woodland wildlife species, including birds and small mammals. The woodland is alive with the usual sounds of chattering woodland birds and buzzards and red kites can be seen soaring above the open canopy. There is scope to create pathways through the brambles to explore the remainder of the woodland.

Gelli Hill Wood is bordered by woodland to the east, south and west and a quiet country road to the north. The woodland is made up of predominantly large conifer trees including Japanese larch and Douglas fir, however there are naturally regenerating broadleaves such as beech, oak and sycamore with an understory of holly, hazel and hawthorn.

The front of the woodland is south facing and as such catches the sunlight through the trees all day and casts an array of shadows across the woodland floor and the clearing/camping area. The elevated position of this woodland gives you a good aspect over neighbouring woodland and the village of Gelli.

The track leading up the hill to this woodland, although fairly steep, is suitable for a family car in dry weather conditions. You will find it easy to park near the entrance of Drim Wood or at the top of the hill close to Gelli Hill Wood. There is also good foot access to the woodland from Gelli Hill, the quiet road which borders the woodland. Due to the good access there are numerous possibilities to extract the timber for use as firewood, woodcraft or for building a tool store within the wood itself. Possible other uses for the woodland include a conservation project to encourage wildlife, a camping retreat, or a woodcraft area.

The Landsker Borderlands Trail, a 60 mile circular trail which explores the rural area on the Pembrokeshire-Carmarthen border, skims the western edge of Gelli. Most notably Gelli Hill Wood is located within 5 miles of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, which takes in about a third of the county including the entire coastal strip. It's the only National Park that is almost entirely coastal. The Wildlife Trust of West and South Wales manages some of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park’s important wildlife sites, such as Skomer Island, famous for their seabird and Atlantic grey seal populations.

The Eastern Cleddau runs along the eastern stretch of Drim Wood and boasts good Sea Trout fishing. The small town of Llandissilio is located on the A478 roughly 3 miles away and offers local amenities. Gelli is located 5 miles from the larger town of Narberth, home to Oakwood Theme Park. It is also about a 20 minute drive from Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire’s county town.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Directions

Gelli Hill wood lies a few miles north of the A40 between Haverfordwest (10 miles) and St Clears (10 miles). From the A40 take the A478 North for about two miles. Just after you enter Clunderwen and before you reach the 30mph zone turn left signposted Maenclochog. Follow this road for approx 2.5 miles. Turn left onto road signposted Gelli and follow this round for 0.2 miles, over two stone bridges. The woodland entrance is approximately 100 metres past the second bridge.

After turning off the road you turn into Drim Wood and onto a stone track suitable for a two wheel drive vehicle. This track is a marked bridle way with public right of way. Continue down this track until you reach a hairpin in the track. The access track to the woodland is straight up the slope to the top of the ridge. It looks steep, but can easily be driven with a four wheel drive.

You will go through a ridestop at the top of this slope. The woodland is at the end of this track.
