Making Elderflower Cordial

Here we see Kate Harden enthusiastically taking us through the various stages of making elderflower cordial, following a favourite recipe from childhood. She also carefully decorates an elderflower cake - delicious! Dissolve 3lbs/1.4kg sugar in 1¾ pints/1 litre of boiling water. Add 2oz/55g citric acid crystals, juice of 1 lemon, 20 elderflower heads. Leave 24 hours. Strain and bottle.

Carved Wooden Games

Sculptor Johnny Woodford shows us the traditional outdoor wooden games he has carved himself on his private woodland using a chainsaw. He explains the process of making the giant bowl, balls and skittles from a range of wood - elm, chestnut and Scots pine, made smooth with an angle-grinder. And so the games begin!

Making and Sailing Coracles

Dave Purvis, with the help of Ian Welford, describes how to make, carry and sail a coracle here at the `Wild About Wood` fair at Yorkshire Arboretum. Dave describes a coracle as, "Just a basket to hold water out..." and believes practicality not aesthetics to be the key. He loves the feeling of being close to nature and speaks knowledgeably about the history behind the craft and its geographical spread, from Scandinavia to Vietnam to Wales.
