Trees

Entering the woodland, you are welcomed by dappled light on a sea of bluebells and various shades of green in spring. Beech and ash trees approximately 60 years old dominate the woodland. The trees were thinned in 2015 and are well spaced, tall and acquiring girth.

A little further into the wood there is an area of larch, also 60 years of age. These well-regarded timber trees have good length and diameter, and are highly valued for their construction grade lumber. Equally valuable are the scattering of Douglas fir and Scots pine found further into the wood. These are in smaller groups and more dispersed amongst the broadleaves. Beech, sweet chestnut, oak and cherry, are all showing good form and character.

Wildlife

A vast array of wildlife including hares, squirrels, wood pigeon are all regular visitors to the woodland. Fallow deer, roe deer and muntjac have also been seen. Woodland provides vital cover for local wildlife and is a haven for deer to rest during daylight hours.

Features

Being located on the southern edge of a larger area of private woodland allows the warming sun to penetrate promoting the growth of woodland plants. This area is also favoured by deer and other mammals.

Included with Blackbirds Wood along its eastern boundary is an old forestry ride. This is a perfect place to camp or picnic.

A bench has been placed nearly centrally in the woodland and if you sit here quietly you may catch a glimpse of a fallow deer moving through the woodland.

Access, tracks and footpaths

The woodland is accessed from the highway via a very solid stoned forestry track suitable for most vehicles. The main wood entrance is locked with a new farm style gate providing wood owners security, a key will be provided to the buyer.

Activities

This woodland provides the opportunity for a new owner to engage in family forestry. Managing a mixed woodland and learning bushcraft skills is a great way to escape modern life. Camping or building woodland hides and all sorts of other outdoor activities can be done here.

Local area and history

Named after one of the notable buildings in Flamstead the almshouses in the High Street, built in 1669; called the Three Blackbirds pub partly dating from the sixteenth century this woodland maybe even older.

This area has been farmed for over a thousand years and many of the woodlands have probably been wooded in different forms for that period and longer.
