  • South Mimms, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire
  • about 4 ¾ acres
  • East Anglia

Description

Gorbions Wood is located just a short drive from London, accessed via a stone road from the highway. The main entrance to the larger area of woodland of which Gorbions Wood forms part is via a charming set of estate gate pillars showing the grand history of this ancient woodland.

Gorbions Wood is probably the nicest section of the larger area of woodland which is known known as Hawkshead Woodland.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Trees

Gorbions Wood is included in the Redwell Wood Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The SSSI is described as a complex site comprising both ancient woodland of the Pedunculate oak/hornbeam type and heathland which is uncommon in Hertfordshire. The ground flora reflects different moisture regimes created by the geology and includes bluebell, enchanter’s nightshade, honeysuckle, wood sage, foxglove and species indicative of the wood’s ancient origins such as wood sedge, yellow archangel, yellow pimpernel and dewberry.

The woodland has some large patches of holly which give all round cover for both owners and wildlife. Some small stands of hazel provide nuts which could be roasted on a fire.

Wildlife

The earliest signs of spring are the hazel catkins adorning the otherwise bare branches in January and February; not to be confused with the later catkins of silver birch, alder and willow. They are the male flowers and grow next to the tiny pink buds of the female flowers, providing early pollen for bees before the hazel comes into full leaf and also an important habitat for moth larvae. Later in the year the hazel nuts are a rich source of autumn protein for woodland mammals laying down reserves for winter.

Catkins are also known as 'lamb's tails' and comes from the Dutch word ‘katteken’, meaning kitten.

Muntjac deer can often be spotted, whilst the tree canopy supports numerous birdlife that includes owls, woodpeckers and red kites to name only a few.

Features

A track meanders from the entrance and provides good access through the woodland. To the south of the track a small glade can be found leading to a bench. Whilst visiting please do take some time to sit here and relax.

Access, tracks and footpaths

An excellent stone track suitable for most family vehicles leads the all the way to the wood allowing an owner year round access without the need for a 4x4.

Activities

This woodland is in an ideal area to spend a well-deserved relaxing time amongst some amazing wildlife. To perfectly capture this, you could set up some wildlife cameras. This could also be a place to have time camping with your family.

Local area and history

Being so close to the capital yet managing to feel so rural has attracted people to this area of Hertfordshire for centuries. The woodland is named after the neighbouring Gobions Estate. Transferred to John More in 1397: the house was renamed More Hall. Edward VI gave this estate to Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1550 by and it was returned to the More family by Mary Tudor in 1553. Grand neighbours indeed !
