The Pine Marten

By woodlandstv

Slow connection? Watch in lower quality

Here woodlandsTV are in the New Forest with Martin Noble to learn about the mysterious woodland creature, the Pine Marten. They like mature woodlands with lots of large trees to climb and build their dens in. Towards the end of the 1800's they were almost extinct but numbers are finally growing, some woodland owners are even building nest boxes up them to encourage their presence and support population growth.

I have only ever seen a few here in Hokkaidō Japan, although they are not so rare here, they are extremely shy… beautiful animals.

…. hence the release of a number in the Forest of Dean recently. I have been seeing alarming numbers of grey squirrels there, teeming, and doing considerable damage.

The Gray Squirrels do not have a predator which behaves like the pine marten in their natural environment and are easier prey for the pine marten than the reds which have co evolved with the pine marten. At home in our forest in Tang it is with great pleasure I watch the reds again. They declined and were replaced with grays when I was a boy, the grays went into rapid decline in the late 90's and early 2000's and have now been replaced with reds.
There are many factors responsible not least of which was the planting of a further 100 acres of broadleaves from 1996-2004.

Funny, the red squirrels here in the US are bigger than the grey ones.

Last week I killed 13 of these cunts as they massacred my chickens.
I killed them with my Electric trap what surprised me is that they came in groups of 2-3!
