Wild Boar: ecosystem benefits and challenges, and managing safe sustainable populations
5 May, 2025, 0 comments
In this film we hear from deer and boar managers Warren Broad and Tim Howarth from Deer Box about the sensitive and complex subject of wild boar management in the Forest of Dean. Warren and Tim talk about the role wild boar play in the woodland ecosystem, such as encouraging seed dispersal, but also some of the negative impacts to young trees and pasture land caused by their rooting behaviours. They show options for tree protection in areas where there are boar and provide advice for dog walkers on what to do if they come across a boar.
In the UK wild boar have no natural predators, so in circumstances where their numbers have become unsustainable or present a danger, Warren and Tim discuss culling. Although there is no legally mandated 'closed season' in the UK for culling boar, Deer Box don't cull boar during the breeding season when a sow might have young.
