Community Woodlands Projects

One of our main aims at Woodlands.co.uk is to get more people into woodlands, including those people and groups who can't afford to buy their own wood. For the last 2 years we have been running a community woodlands project and in that space of time we have had more than 500 requests from people who wish to use woodlands for activities involving the local community. We now have people who use our woods for children's groups, scouts, forest schools, social forestry, bushcraft courses, woodlands management demonstrations, off-road horse riding organisations, orienteering and coppicing.

As we have received such a large number of enquiries, we have decided to set up a forum to put community groups in touch with other woodland owners who would be interested in allowing their woodland to be used in this way.

Are you a woodland owner?

Below are some of the projects requiring woodland. You may also wish to read our advice on hosting a project in your woodland.

East Yorkshire & The Humber

I am looking to establish a Forest School in the region, which will offer supervised woodland activities to boost children's confidence and independence. The work is fully risk-assessed, the environmental impact positive/neutral, and responsible in terms of forest management. There will be a full consultation/collaboration with the owners, who will be able to impose restrictions on usage. For more information on Forest Schools, see www.forestschools.com - I will be operating as a qualified Level 3 Practioner. More details

Robertsbridge; within 15 miles of Robertsbridge

Hi Sir/Mam We've established a local Cycling club (Cycle Battle and Robertsbridge). I'm heading the off road/mtb section. We are looking for routes/tracks running through woodlands if possible. We get together as a group (6-10 people ageing between our 30's to 60's) on a Saturday mornings to do some cycling around in our area. We really enjoy the outdoor life, away from the rush of modern living, getting out into nature to recharge our batteries for the week to come, we do it for fun/enjoyment/fitness and not racing. But because of limited routes and most on lanes (dangerous with the cars) we are now desperately looking for some new off road routes so we can alternate between them, prevent it from overuse. It's for the club and not for the general public, so that there could be some control to the property, it can be unofficial. as long as we have permission from the land owners. We are there to respect their property and are fully aware of closing gates and their livestock as well as looking after the woodlands and be a extra set of eyes for their property. We'll take full responsibility and will enter at own risk. We'll look after our own tracks, If there's no jeep tracks we can create our own tracks (about the size of a dear track - we can even use existing dear tracks), without damage the property. We're only passing through, they properly won't even notice that we were there. We'll mainly use these tracks (depending how many we have) 1-2 times a month on a Weekend. Sometimes in the week 1 or 2 of us will cycle it just check it before the weekends ride. As a club, we don't allow littering and we do take it very serious to leave property clean We are prepared to give it a trail period so that the owners can see if it's working or not. Hope to hear from you soon and thank you for taking time to read this Kind regards Hannes - 01580 881248 or 07547762286 More details

Anywhere within an hour and a halfs drive from London, but would consider further afield

I am looking for woodland in which to run courses that will have a holistic approach to woodwork. I think it is important to establish a bond between new woodworkers and the natural world, and that a course can be more than just learning, it can be a physical and mental refuge, an antidote to modern life. I run a small business that creates, amongst other things, unusual rustic furniture and diverse projects for community groups. I also provide furniture making courses for people interested in making things for themselves and being more self sufficient, my emphasis is always on enjoyment of the task in hand. I am based at a city farm in London. If you think you might be intersted then feel free to email me for more details. More details

I am a musician specialising in percussion and would like to set up community music workshops in outdoor spaces. I also teach music to young people with disabilities who would welcome the opportunity to get out of London and explore woodlands with a focus on the sensory aspects, including music-making. If you have any woodland that could be available for either of these projects then please let me know. Thanks, Rachel More details
