Hedge Laying: South of England Style ~ by WoodlandsTV

Slow connection? Watch in lower quality

Here at Bentley Woodfair we see members of the South of England Hedge Laying Society (Chris Burchell Collins, Gary Moore and Frank Wright) demonstrate their skill using hazel to lay a hedge in the particular `South of England` style - with its specific use of `binders` to lock the hedge down tightly. They talk us through the traditional tools and techniques they adopt to ensure a permanent, solid, stock-proof, living hedge that will last for hundreds of years. http://sehls.weebly.com/ http://www.bentley.org.uk/ An Adliberate film http://www.adliberate.co.uk for WoodlandsTV http://www.woodlands.co.uk/tv

One of the most satisfying jobs I have ever done,, trained by an expert in Warwickshire, loved it and was the best student despite being a thru and thru city kid, my instructor would get us to put very small notches in the layed wood, all along it as they also would sprout new growth in particularly thin parts of the hedge, no doubt you do the same?? I'm sure I still have the skill tho haven't done it in a long time,,

Ideally… never. It'll regrow to form a very thick hedge row.

What was that hammer at 4:11 called? I couldn't make it out as it sounded like it could be 'beal' or 'beatle'.
