Description
Set upon the south eastern fringe of what used to be the Braddon Estate, Stowford Wood is a manageable woodland in a pleasant setting with good access, a private parking area and well spaced younger broadleaved trees betwixt grassy rides.

Trees
An exciting mix of tree species provide a useful future timber resource for small scale forestry or green woodworking projects as well as a varied habitat for flora and fauna.
Here you will find broadleaved species such as oak, beech, ash, poplar, willow and hazel.
Wildlife
Deer graze the grassy knolls in-between the trees whilst other mammals such as badger and foxes prowl at dusk.
Buzzards can often be spotted gliding on the thermals overhead and the vibrating sound of a woodpecker drilling trees for grubs and insects can be heard.

An old wood bank runs along the western fringes of the woodland and is lined with mature beech trees.
Upon the outer side of the shared access track along the east and south of Stowford Wood is an attractive watercourse.
At the central part of the woodland is a large grassy glade that is perfect for camping.

Stowford Wood benefits from access over a concrete road from the public highway which then becomes a stoned forestry track suited for most vehicles for year round use. Finally there is a concrete ford that allows vehicles over the stream.
There are no public rights of way within the woodland.

Local area and history
Stowford Wood is nestled within the beautiful North Devon countryside within the parish of Ashwater. Although in a peaceful location, the A30 is accessible and to the north the market town of Holsworthy is only a few miles away whilst the popular North Cornwall surfing beaches lie 15 miles to the west. These offer opportunities for surfing and bodyboarding along with scenic walks, sailing and fishing.
The local village of Ashwater is within walking distance and provides a pub, community shop, post office and church.
Nearby is the village of Stowford, an old settlement which has been inhabited since before William the Conqueror arrived. Within the churchyard is an ancient stone that is dated to the 8th - 11th century. Stowford is from the old English 'stan' and 'ford' so a stony water crossing.

- Take the A30 and from either westbound or eastbound leave at the junction at Stowford Cross signposted to Roadford Lake as well as Broadwoodwidger & Bratton Clovelly.
- Turn left at the T-junction if you are coming off eastbound from the A30 or right at the T-junction if coming off westbound from the A30, each way will be signposted to Broadwoodwidger & Roadford Lake.
- Stay on this road for 5 miles, crossing the stunning landscape of Roadford Lake until you get to Ivyhouse Cross where you turn left.
- Turn immediately left at Reservoir Cross towards Ashwater.
- Stay on this road for 3 miles, going through Ashmill, until you see a farm lane on your right signposted to Braddon & East Venn.
- Turn right onto the concrete farm lane and at the first fork take the left turn towards the Braddon Estate.
- After around 100 metres look out for the old metal gates on you left indicating the old entrance of the estate and continue along the concrete track, following it round to the right when you reach the top end by a sign saying 'North Ride'.
- Staying on the main concrete track, turning right down towards the old courtyard of the estate. Please drive with care here.
- Head through the courtyard, out into an open field where the track becomes a stone forestry track with a wooden fence on your left hand side.
- Follow this track down the hill, around to the left, along for around 150 metres and then continue along the track around to the right.
- Keep on this long straight part of the stoned forestry track, passing a large lake on your right, until it turns left at the end.
- Follow the track left here and after about 30 metres you will see a spur off to the right where there is a concrete ford over the stream.
- Here you can either park and walk across the stream using the footbridge or you can drive carefully over the ford.
- Either way turn right once upon the stone track and follow the track for around 150 metres until you see the entrance and parking area for Stowford Wood on you left hand side indicated with a 'Stowford Wood' name sign. You can turn and park here on the stoned area.
