  • Rackheath, Norwich, Norfolk
  • about 7 acres
  • East Anglia

Description

This easily accessed woodland, is a nature lovers haven. Located within cycling distance from the city centre of Norwich and the outlying areas of Rackheath, Catton and Sprowston. The woodland has been previously well managed with a diverse patchwork of both mature and young trees. On ground level numerous shrubs, bracken and bramble create privacy and an excellent environment for wildlife.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Trees

The woodland was purchased by the former owners after the Second world war and was thinned and then restocked in the 1960s with a mixture of both Corsican pine, Scots pine , larch and Western Red Cedar. Since then the woodland has been allowed to naturally regenerate with birch, sweet chestnut, ash and sycamore. This has created a woodland that has a very natural feel. A great renewable source of timber for years to come.

Wildlife

The surrounding local area is a mixture of woodland and parkland and is known to be home to deer and hares. The tree canopy provides a home for owls, buzzards and numerous other birds.

Features

Good specimen trees and a scattering of bluebells in spring make this a very attractive woodland.

Access, tracks and footpaths

The woodland has excellent access via a track from the highway. The ground in the woodland is firm underfoot once you are within the wood.

Activities

Within such easy striking distance from the centre of Norwich this woodland offers the owner a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Local area and history

Rackheath was the location of a second world war USAF base, the most easterly and therefore the nearest to Germany of all British wartime airfields. Near the village sign on Salhouse Road, next to the gate of Holy Trinity Church, is a memorial plaque to the 467th Bombardment Group, which consisted of four squadrons who flew B-24 Liberators from the base in support of the Allied advance across Europe. Part of the former airfield is now the woodland. The wood is named after King Richard, the "Lionheart" who gave Norwich a Royal Charter to become a city in 1194 and in memory of the lionhearted bomber crews who fought from Rackheath. It is for this historical reason that this woodland was named Lionheart Wood.
