Description
Tasgall Wood is a small part of a wider woodland known as Kahiwi Wood which comes from a Maori word meaning 'ridge of a hill'. These are very special woods that are not too dense with trees allowing free movement through the majority of the woods. The recently upgraded track affords good access and each woodland has its own area of hardstanding.
The entrance to Tasgall is next to a natural clearing thick with blaeberries that will give plenty of fruit in the summer months. There is a wee bench here, a place to take stock and ponder.
The woodland is mainly Scots pine with a scattering of birch, the pine is of an age where some judicious thinning would be in order or at least a bit of crown-lifting to help ease of movement. Creating clearings within a woodland is a good way of kick-starting the natural seed bank as well as providing timber for useful projects.
It would be quite nice to create a clearing somewhere in the woods to use as a bit of a base camp. This is where the fun of woodland ownership comes into play, it can get you thinking creatively about what works best for you and the woodland. These woods are well worth a trip out to and as a comparison we also have a number of small woods at our Burgie Woods site that are not too far away.
There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
Trees
These woods are mainly Scots pine interspersed with birch and the odd rowan allowing light to get to the forest floor, some thinning would increase the biodiversity of what is happening on the ground and allow the more dominant trees the room to grow to a good size.
Wildlife
The wildlife here is abundant with the sound of birdsong resonating around the woodland.
Features
As well as the standing timber, blaeberries proliferate on the forest floor providing a good source of food for many animals and the odd human.
Access, tracks and footpaths
The tracks have recently been upgraded providing good access throughout.
Rights and covenants
All sporting and mineral rights are sold with the wood.
As is the case for all our woodlands, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the woodland.Activities
These woods will give someone the scope and space to try all manner of projects, the first job would probably be to observe what is going on in the woodland before doing too much. Always best to try and work with the nature that is already there, so as not to disturb the rhythm of the woodland.
Local area and history
Kahiwi Woods are close to Forres which is a town and former royal burgh in the north of Scotland on the Moray coast, approximately 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Inverness and 12 miles (19 km) west of Elgin. There are many geographical and historical attractions nearby such as the River Findhorn, and there are also classical, historical artefacts and monuments within the town itself, such as Forres Tolbooth and Nelson's Tower. Brodie Castle, the home of the Brodie Clan, lies to the west of the town, close to the A96.
Findhorn Bay witnessed a brief episode in the 1745 Jacobite rising. In March 1746 the French brigantine Le Bien Trouvé entered the tidal waters with dispatches for Bonnie Prince Charlie but her departure, with the Prince's aide-de-camp on board, was delayed by the arrival of two British men-o'-war.
The woodland sits directly adjacent to Califer Viewpoint offering panoramic views of the coast and beyond.
