SOLD: Palamon Wood £55,000 Freehold

Description

Palamon Wood is an ancient mixed woodland featuring sweet chestnut, oak, birch, holly, hazel, wild service, mountain ash and Scots pine. There are ancient woodland features - a woodbank along the west boundary and flora including hard ferns and evidence of bluebells. Mushrooms and mosses can be found on the forest floor. A rustic bench has been installed in a small clearing alongside a splendid ancient wild service tree (a rare species in the UK). To the northeast of the wood is a small quarry, the boundary of the wood being at the foot of the quarry.

Palamon Wood is situated about 1 ½ miles north from the village of Sissinghurst, Kent and is easily accessed via a stoned track. It is part of a larger woodland known as Home Wood. There is a track through the wood providing access to the adjoining woodland owner. There are no public footpaths in or adjoining the wood. It slopes gently to the west providing some privacy from the road.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Trees

The south of Palamon Wood comprises mixed broadleaves - sweet chestnut, oak, birch, holly, hazel and a rare wild service tree. An area of the east of the wood (alongside the road frontage) has recently been coppiced. Many mature oak standards remain. The coppice will regrow quickly providing screening from the road and will not need to be cut again for approx. 15 - 20 years. Please note the cut timber is not included in the sale. The north of the wood comprises Scots pine, including an impressive ancient Scots pine on the northeast boundary of the wood. The occasional mountain ash is found among the pine.

Palamon Wood has been designated mainly as Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland (ASNW) by Natural England. The conifer in the north of the wood falls into an area which has been designated as Plantation on Ancient Woodland Sites. ASNW and PAWS is woodland that has been under constant tree cover since at least 1600AD. It is valued as a rich reserve of biodiversity. There is an approved Felling Licence for the wood – details of this are available upon request.

Activities

For those looking for firewood, the birch may benefit from some thinning to allow more light through to the forest floor. It is a good firewood as because it burns well and produces a moderate amount of heat. It splits fairly easy and dries fast once split. Why not try foraging for mushrooms, or identifying the mosses found on the forest floor or building a hide to watch the birds?

Local area and history

Nearby is the village of Sissinghurst and Sissinghurst Castle Gardens and approx. 2 miles away is Cranbrook - known as the ‘Capital of the Weald’ this attractive small town is well worth a visit.
