SOLD: Winbolt Wood £85,000 Freehold

Description

Set on the higher parts of the High Weald above the nearby towns of Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells, Wimbolt Wood is well-placed on the edge of Castlehill Woodlands, a large area of mixed woodland in the High Weald AONB area of outstanding natural beauty.

Trees

Here are sweet chestnut, birch, oak, ash, sycamore, Norway spruce and Scots pine. Much of the ash has dieback so is a perfect source of firewood. If sold for firewood, timber sales are free of income tax! The Norway spruce is growing well and should make good sawlog timber, again free of income tax. This could be a good wood to qualify for Inheritance Tax relief, worth getting an accountants advice.

Wildlife

Bluebells, primroses and wild daffodils, a visiting deer population who pass through the wood as they wander the fields (see photos) and woods are some of the wildlife are on show here.

Features

A ridestop marks the entrance by the woodlands bench, the wood slopes down gently from here. Ash is a perfect wood for longbows and there's plenty to select from here.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Access is off a public highway, along a PME (private means of entry - maintained by highways) along a private right of way - where the right is with and without vehicles, for all purposes and at all times.

Rights and covenants

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Activities

Lots to do here, identifying the oak as the principal species for growing on, collecting ash for firewood, stacking fallen timber for wildlife brash piles, and generally enjoying the countryside.

Local area and history

There is evidence of Iron Age activity with the Hill Fort further over to the east. When this was abandoned is difficult to guess, perhaps by 100 BC. It is thought that sites like these were not settled but used as temporary stop-offs by populations from larger sites. This area seems to be the boundary of two tribes, the Regnenses and the Cantiaci.

The land is within Capel parish, itself a part of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council in Kent.
