Description
Cannel Wood is a small mixed woodland in the midst of several larger woods. Largely level, the landscape dips ever so gently to the south and is a pleasant, open, accessible space.
A couple of drainage channels cross the wood. These were created when the wood was planted and occasionally run with water in times of heavy rainfall. The rest of the time, they remain damp enough to support their own variety of plants and give home to a number of native amphibians.
The woodland was planted over the landscaped site of an opencast coal mine that closed in the 50's. The trees have taken well and are maturing nicely into a well-established woodland. An exciting opportunity to obtain a woodland in its youth with plenty of scope for additional planting and supplementing the existing biodiversity.
Trees
Cannel Wood is an interesting mix of native broadleaf species and a smaller number of conifers.
Deciduous larch and native Scots pine are the conifer species with birch, willow, ash, cherry, alder and bird cherry being the main broadleafs.
Smaller rowan and hazel are also present with vibrant yellow gorse along the western fence line.
Wildlife
As an isolated block of woodland amidst the surrounding grassland, the wood is an important island refuge for the local wildlife.
Roe deer and badger are regular itinerant visitors, soats, wesels, field mice and voles inhabit the mossy woodland floor.
Blue tits, chaffinches, robins and wrens can regularly be seen flitting through the branches with jays, rooks and magpies crossing from the surrounding farmland.
Features
The woodland benefits from a generous hardstanding, ideal for vehicle turning and timber stacking. A rustic bench has been sited in a small glade to encourage a moment's repose and to soak in the environment.
Access, tracks and footpaths
The woodland is accessed via the former mine roadway, which links the A594 to the main entrance to the wood. From there, a well-made stone track continues through the wood to the woodland entrance.
Rights and covenants
The sporting rights are owned and included in the sale.
As is the case for all our woodlands, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the woodland.Activities
An ideal woodland for wildlife observation and conservation. Further planting could be carried out in the open glades; the addition of native wildflowers would add to the species already established and further increase the biodiversity on the woodland floor.
An overnight camping trip would give the opportunity to see the nocturnal wildlife which is so often missed.
In years to come, as the trees mature, a useful source of home firewood could be gathered and processed in the wood.
Its location gives an ideal opportunity to explore this quiet corner of western Cumbria.
Local area and history
In times past, the surrounding area was a thriving coal-mining community. Cannel, from which the wood takes its name, was a type of coal, found and mined in this location.
Nearby, Maryport was a busy coal-exporting port which also supported a small local fishing industry, which is still active today.
Senhouse Museum showcases the area's Roman history and influence and is well worth a visit.
