Lickbank Wood £59,000 Freehold

  • Dearham, Maryport, Cumbria
  • about 5 ⅔ acres
  • Cumbria

Description

Lickbank Wood lies in the far corner of the larger Moorside Wood, which in itself is located nearby to the Cumbrian village of Dearham, surrounded by agricultural land. Not far from the coastal town of Maryport, this is a quiet corner of Cumbria sitting just outside the Lake District National Park.

The wood is still in its youth, having been planted around 20 years ago on top of a landscaped coal mine, which closed in the 50s. A sensitive mix of planting has meant that the wood is maturing nicely, with forest floor plants such as foxglove starting to colonise. The wood is largely level with a slight dip towards the open grassy area along the southern boundary. From this standpoint, the first fringes of the Lakeland fells can easily be seen.

A small area of the wood, which protrudes into the surrounding pasture, has been clear-felled. This would be an ideal location for a small replanting project to replace the harvested conifers.

Trees

Lickbank Wood is planted with a good selection of native broadleaf species, together with scattered larch and Scots pine. The deciduous species include: ash, cherry, alder and willow. Also included are hazel and rowan; these smaller varieties will help to create an understorey layer, which is vital for the health of the wood as it further matures.

Bramble and gorse can be found along the boundaries, together with several quite large lime trees which fringe the clear-felled area in the south-western corner.

Wildlife

The woodland is an island haven for wildlife amidst open fields. Roe deer and hare find shelter here, evidenced by forms and scrapes in the grass beneath the trees.

Seabirds are frequently seen passing overhead, as are skeins of geese moving from inland roosts to feeding grounds in the nearby Solway Estuary.

A wide variety of small bird species inhabit the woods and can be seen foraging beneath the canopy.

Features

The woodland benefits from a generous hardstanding, ideal for vehicle turning and timber stacking. A rustic bench invites you to sit a while and watch as nature unfolds before you.

Access, tracks and footpaths

The woodland is accessed via the former mine roadway, which links the A594 to the main entrance to the wood. From there, a well-made stone track continues through the wood to Lickbank's entrance.

Rights and covenants

The sporting rights are owned and included in the sale.

As is the case for all our woodlands, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the woodland.

Activities

In years to come, as the trees mature, a useful source of home firewood could be gathered and processed in the wood. The level topography and scattered open glades makes for an ideal location for occasional family camping and crafting activity.

The wide diversity means that Lickbank Wood is ideal for wildlife observation, the installation of bird and bat boxes would encourage resident wildlife and are great spots to locate a trail-cam to watch nature unfold.

Local area and history

Lickbank Wood takes its name from one of the coal seams, which was exploited beneath the wood in times gone by.

The coal industry was a major factor in the establishment of the nearby towns and villages, with coal being transported out by rail or via the harbour at Maryport. This attractive coastal town was founded in Roman times, and a small museum tells the story of these times.
