SOLD: Coed Ffordd Hir £49,000 Freehold

Description

Ffordd Hir means long road, and this wood echoes with the memory of old carts and horses; the pathway through the centre of the wood leads to an old stile on the western boundary.

Above this pathway there are young ash and rowan. A private quiet path leads upwards to a wooden bench in a hidden clearing below a hazel coppice. Here you'll find birch, blackthorn and oaks, and overhead you can spot buzzards and perhaps even the peregrine falcon.

Below the old cart way the ground drops gently; there's a variety of young and old trees, some planted perhaps with the purpose of harvesting in the future. Nestled in amongst the trees, remains of old walls can be seen.

Above the path is denser wood, blackthorn, birch, young oak, hazel and ash. Very natural and full of wildlife, and most of it is designated as Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Trees

Below the old cart way through the wood is a young plantation of ash, birch and beech. Throughout the beautifully maintained woodland are huge ancient oaks towering into the sky, with old vines woven around their trunks.
North of the path is a mix of holly, rowan , birch, beech, many coppiced giving a gentle canopy over the woodland floor.
This woodland is mostly broad leaf and deciduous.

Wildlife

During our work in the woodland we have been lucky enough to see Red Deer grazing outside our tents in the early morning. There are also a few badger dens, some old and some active.

Spring and summer sees numerous butterflies and insects.

The birdlife is diverse, from Canadian Geese nesting on the nearby lake, to large buzzards and kites circling overhead. We've also seen peregrine falcons in the upper parts of the woodlands.

The woodland and fields are full of life the whole year round.

Features

An ancient woodland with an easily accessed old cartway, Ffordd Hir has steep upper land gradually levelling off towards the south.

Access, tracks and footpaths

The old cart way is recorded as a road used as a public path, and travels west to east through the woodland, but seems to be little used. Apart from this there are no established pathways except for the bench path, and the odd deer track.

Local area and history

Behind the woodlands lies the hill of Moel Bentyrch, on which lies the ancient settlement of Pen Y Bwlch, Bwlch meaning 'pass'. Ffordd Hir is a rare ancient woodland; according to the Woodland Trust 'Ancient woods are areas of woodland that have persisted since 1600 in England and Wales, and 1750 in Scotland. This is when maps started to be reasonably accurate so we can tell that these areas have had tree cover for hundreds of years. They are relatively undisturbed by human development. As a result, they are unique and complex communities of plants, fungi, insects and other microorganisms.'
