Description
Coed y Foel is a beautiful broadleaf woodland nestling in the heart of Eryri. A small cabin gives a comfortable place to sit and relax; a flat plateau on the side of the very northern tip of the wild Rhinogydd. Views across to the Moelwynion mountains and down to the Dwyryd Estuary peek between the beautiful canopy.
From the recently created car parking area, ascend via a small path to the hut, or explore across to the southern tip of the woodland. The western side has a small stream, with the vegetation reflecting this lifegiving dampness. The vegetation changes through the year, from bluebells and spring flowers, through to the bilberries and areas of heather, there is nearly always something to attract pollinators. The birdlife is vast, we've seen Buzzards, Goshawks, songbirds and plenty of "Little Brown Ones".
Trees
Coed Y Foel is rich in species found in the ancient woodlands of the area, more information can be found here:
https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/habitats/ancient-woodland/
Trees include Birch, Willow, Hazel, Beech, Oaks and Sycamore. The mature trees are well spaced, meaning that there is a well-established under-canopy which is great for biodiversity. Check out the huge number of oak saplings in areas that get the light!
Wildlife
The woodland is renowned for its bilberries (llus in Welsh). They bloom typically in mid-spring, peak season for picking is June to August. Bluebells and various Worts and Sorrels are on the floor of the woodland, and on the stone walls.
Birds: The mature upland oak woods along the river are home to woodland birds, including pied flycatchers, redstarts, and wood warblers. Raptors such as Buzzards and Goshawks have been seen flying overhead.
The woodland is full of a huge variety of mosses.
The local area is renowned for its wildlife, so if you ever leave the woodland be prepared to be inspired!
Features
Within the woodland, a small cabin with a wood burner provides a cosy place to have a break whilst working in the woods. The buyer will be given the key to this upon purchase. Whilst waterproof and insulated, a new owner may want to shore up the roof with a more robust covering.
The small stream to the west seems to flow in all but the very driest months, and adds a pleasant background soundtrack to the other natural sounds of the woodland.
Access, tracks and footpaths
A recently improved stone track leads up from the main road, through a series of 4 gates.
Within the woodland there are some small sheep-track type paths, perfect for exploring.
On the OS map there is a Public Footpath marked, but the beginning and end of this path, outside the woodland are hard (if not impossible) to find, so these really don't get used at all.
Rights and covenants
As is the case for all our woodlands, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the woodland.
Activities
What a location in Eryri National Park! There are so many activities and things to do locally! For the adventurous and skilled the northern end of the Rhinogydd is within walking distance (Moel Ysgafarnagod is 5km away). The whole area is renowned for its hut and stone circles. Bryn Cader Faner is probably the best known, but there is more to find!
