Description
Fingal Wood sits within about a 35acre block of woodland known as Gateside Woods, an old mining site planted with a mix of species. The woodland is fairly flat and is split into clearly defined areas.
The conifer is maturing well and will provide good timber either to sell, or to use for any number of projects; a path has been opened up to be able to get a feel for the space. There is a large section of deciduous planting that would be ideal for setting up a camp. The hardwoods grow more slowly but will eventually dominate the area as the woodland matures.
The woods are very private with only a few people walking the woods on a regualar basis. The woods here have proven to be popular and early viewing is recommended.
There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
Trees
As the conifers mature it would be worth thinning out the smaller trees to encourage the large ones to fill out more; this can be done in a sensitive way following the principles of continuous tree cover management.
Wildlife
As a general rule of thumb the more biodiversity a woodland has, then there should also be a corresponding increase in wildlife. Wildlife generally prefers a woodland with plenty of cover for birds and animals to shelter from predators.
Features
This is a very tranquil wood with views across the rolling countryside, but at the same time very accessible and convenient for Edinburgh.
Access, tracks and footpaths
The access tracks have recently been maintained and renewed with on site stone and there is plenty of material for any future collective repairs to the shared track.
Rights and covenants
All sporting rights are sold with the woodland however mineral rights have been retained by the coal board as it was an old mining site. Due to the effects of burning fossil fuels, the likelihood of coal ever being extracted again is so low, as to be nigh on zero.
As is the case for all our meadows, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the meadow.Activities
A question that is often asked is what can I do with my woodland and the answer invariably is whatever you want to do. Woodland ownership is all about the process, there is no particular endgame in mind but an inexhaustible list of projects just waiting to be explored.
Local area and history
Gateside Woodland sits directly next to the small ex-mining village of Standburn, with the closest town being Falkirk about 6 miles away.
Falkirk sits on the junction of the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals and as such became an important trade route and hub of heavy industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. The steel industry was dominant as was coal mining, necessary to feed the engine of industrialisation. The area is now more dependant on tourism and retail with many old mining sites reverting to woodland.
Nearby attractions include the Falkirk Wheel and The Helix , home of the famous Kelpie art installation.
Edinburgh is only twenty miles away and Glasgow 30 miles making these woods very accessible from the city.
