Description
Gartmore Wood really is a wonderful woodland, located in the heart of one of the most beautiful places in Scotland and at nearly 27 acres, it is larger than most of our woodlands. Abundant in flora and fauna but open enough to easily walk around, but with a minority or recent regeneration in the northern section that is more jungle like.
Access is taken off the A81 while at present there is no established internal vehicle track, except for the old track that leads from the gatehouse to Gartmore House. There is however, evidence of an old track that meanders through the wood and joins up with the gatehouse track, though this would involve some work to make it passable by vehicle once again.
There is a lovely atmosphere to these woods that comes with age, a good mixture of young and old trees with all the other species associated with ancient woodland. As always the detail lies within the smaller things, ferns and sorrell and mosses and lichen. This is woodland as it should be, rich in biodiversity and all the resilience this offers as a vibrant eco system.
With many mature veteran oak trees that stand emphatically proud within the wood, they bring their own awe and wonderment. This is a unique opportunity to take on the stewardship of a quite stunning woodland, worth a visit and a wander around on a sunny afternoon.
There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
Trees
These woods are home to many veteran oak and ash and beech trees that are spectacular specimens and are a delight to be around and probably date back to the 1800's. There is an ancient feel here, in what are spectacular woods.
Wildlife
These woods will be home to all the usual small mammals associated with British woods, from deer to red squirrels and probably the nocturnal visits of badgers. Careful obsevation will reveal its wildlife story.
Features
Sitting within the Trossachs National Park, the woods are accessible from Glasgow and would provide the perfect escape from city life.
Access, tracks and footpaths
There are nt tracks in the southern part of the wood though there is the outline of an older route winding through the trees. There is a track that dissects the woodland that goes from the Gatehouse to Gartmore House though there is now a gate restricting access past the Gatehouse which is now a private dwelling.. There is a right of access on the short bit of track from the A81 to the woodland.
Rights and covenants
There are no covenants attached to this woodland though it does sit within the planning control of the Trossachs National Park.
As is the case for all our woodlands, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the woodland.Activities
This is a woodland that is rich in biodiversity, perfect as a setting for bushcraft courses or for forest schools.
Local area and history
The woods used to be a part of Gartmore Estate, Gartmore House dates from the mid 18th Century and can be seen across the fields. The estate was dissolved some time ago with Gartmore House now a conference and activity centre. Aberfoyle is 3 miles away and is a popular tourist destination.
