SOLD: Slitrig Wood £35,000 Freehold

Description

Slitrig Wood takes its name from the Slitrig Water which forms its western boundary. Sandwiched between the river and the quiet B6399 the wood is a microcosm of the larger Stobs Castle woodland of which it is a part.

Mainly populated by deciduous trees the wood also has a few conifers scattered throughout. Historically this area has always been woodland and the variety of plants found carpeting the woodland floor is clear evidence of this

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.

Trees

The woodland is comprised of a varied mix of native broadleafs. Sycamore, ash, alder and birch predominate with a scattering of beech, oak and elm. One or two Scots pine can also be found along the wall side.

Beneath the trees a carpet of ancient woodland fauna abounds; dog's mercury, butterbur, and ferns vie for a space with a large patch of nettle-leaved bellflower claiming a territory next to the river.

Wildlife

The riverside setting provides a perfect home for a large variety of birdlife. In addition to the usual tits and finches, dippers can frequently be seen with their peculiar bobbing stance. A fellow fisherman the grey heron takes a more stately stance, a patient hunter indeed.

Although separate from the main wood, no doubt roe deer cross the river to forage in the verdant undergrowth.

Features

The wood features river frontage onto the Slitrig Water for its full length. A woodland bench has been installed overlooking the free-flowing river.

A good hardstanding behind the locked access gate facilitates the management of the woodland and could be used as a firewood stacking area.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Access into the wood is off the B6399 into a large layby and then through a locked gate in the wall to the hardstanding beyond.

Rights and covenants

The sporting rights, including the fishing, are owned and included in the sale.

Activities

Within the wood are many opportunities to observe the comings and goings in the natural environment. A spot of fishing or camping by the riverside would be an excellent choice of weekend pastime.

A reasonable quantity of domestic wood fuel could be sustainably harvested from the standing timber.

Local area and history

Steeped in history this area was home to marauding reivers who passed by on raids across the border.

Behind the wood lies the historic Stobs Military Camp. For nearly 60 years, thousands of young men used the facilities at Stobs Camp near Hawick in the Scottish Borders to train for war. Now the sometimes bleak, windswept hills lie as silent witnesses to all that passed before them.

The Waverly Line once ran from Edinburgh, all the way down to Carlisle, with Stobs Castle a stop on this line.
