Tarf Wood £55,000 Freehold

Description

Tarf Wood lies along the bank of the free flowing Tarf Water and is part of the larger Barlae Bridge Woodland.

A beautiful and unique woodland, which is, despite is modest size, suprisingly varied in habitat and topography.

Willow copses are surrounded by open meadow, raised grassland and lower marshy areas which drain into a wee burn, which in turn feeds the Tarf Water. The dark appearance of the water is quite normal for the area and is caused by the surrounding peat on which most of the wood is located, although the bedrock, topped by clumps of furze does protrude through in places.

Marshy meadows with waving grasses gives way to more elevated gassy areas with clumps of hawthorn, gorse and bracken.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.

Trees

The marshy areas and the river bank are mainly populated by willow, with hawthorn and furze occupying the raised areas. large thickets of blackthorn are located along the eastern boundary fence.

A variety of mosses and lichens can be found in the willow patches with aerial ferns giving an almost rainforest appearance.

Swathes of marshland grasses are punctuated by a variety of wildflowers including orchids and cornflowers.

Wildlife

Roe deer are evident throughout the wood: large muddy pools are visible, created by the stags as part of their mating rituals.

The trackside drainage channel, despite its relatively modest size, is home to an astonishing variety of aquatic life. Frogs, toads and newts represent the amphibians, with a range of diving beetles, pond skaters, and water boatmen filling the invertebrate niche.

Herons and ducks are frequent visitors along the riverside with a wide variety of tits, finches and warblers throughout the willow stands.

Features

The woodland features a wide range of habitats including frontage along Tarf Water.

A rustic bench has been installed to encourage rest and contemplation and a rustic bridge assists in crossing a wee burn wich runs through the wood.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Tarf Wood is easily accessed from the A75 Dumfries to Stranraer highway and then down a single-track road to the gated entrance. From there a well-founded stone track leads to, and then along a former railway track to the entrance of the wood.

Within the wood small pathways have been cut along the river bank and through blackthorn thickets to facilitate access.

If you are in tending to view, please take wellies; this will enable you to explore all areas of the wood fully.

Rights and covenants

The sporting rights are owned and included in the sale.

Activities

The fishing rights are owned and transferred on purchase, and access through the wood to the river bank has been facilitated by cut pathways and small burn crossing bridges.

The raised areas are an ideal location for a quiet camping spot or for longer stays it should be possible to create a small cabin, subject to the appropriate planning consent,

Local area and history

The is situated in the heart of the Machars of Galloway, this low lying yet undulating forms a peninsula into the Solway Firth and benefits from an unusually mild climate due to the influence of the gulf stream. Easy to miss from the ground, but evident from the OS map, the surrounding landscape is dotted with drumlins. Often wooded over, these are geological remnants of the last ice age after its retreat about 10,000 years ago.

The southern boundary track lies along the former Dumfries to Stranraer railway line which was closed, along with many others, at the behest of Lord Beeching in the railway reform of 1963.
