Harper's Wood £69,000 Freehold

Description

Harper's Wood sits high on the Kymin, just south of Monmouth, on the west facing slopes of the River Wye gorge in the Lower Wye Valley. An area long valued for its scenic beauty, the woodlands here also form one of the most important areas for woodland nature conservation in Britain, reflected in the SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) status of the majority of the woodland.

Its feature of special scientific interest is as a semi-natural broadleaved Woodland with a well established diversity of habitat and species. This is reflected in the copious springtime ground flora of many different wildflowers including many ancient woodland indicators unsurprisingly! Wood anemones, the heart shaped foliage of yellow celandine, and the sorrel leaves of oxalis together with a multitude of the green spikes of native bluebells which, come April, will paint the forest floor a shimmering violet-blue in all directions. The distinctive whiff of wild garlic is already in the air in early spring, as its foliage emerges, soon to be followed by starry white flowers. Yellow archangel blooms when the bluebells fade.

Although Harper's Wood is essentially set on a slope, it is not overly demanding to make your way around and the ground levels off at many points throughout the woodland creating lovely spots for watching the birdlife or just sitting and enjoying the tranquility of this ancient woodland.

Trees

An interesting and diverse mix of trees here, with mostly mature oak, both Quercus robur and petraea, along with the rarer small leaved lime - Tilia cordata, hornbeam, beech, some ash, a fabulous Wych elm, birch, cherry, holly and hazel.

Wildlife

Long established biodiversity is evident here in the quantity of various ground flora, and numerous large, small and tiny entrances to of all sorts of forest creatures home's abound if you look closely, including what appears to be a good sized badger sett. Birdlfe thrives here, including robins, wren, woodpigeon, woodpecker, treecreepers and nuthatches amongst many other varieties seen and heard over time. The open grassland on the eastern boundary of Harper's Wood provides opportunities for spotting kites, buzzards and other birds of prey including kestrel and sparrowhawk.

Dormice are being monitored in the woodland with nesting boxes fixed mostly amongst the coppiced hazel.

Activities

Owning land which is a SSSI comes with some responsibility, but very much within the scope of the normal management of a beautiful bit of ancient woodland. NRW (Natural Resource Wales) is committed to working with owners collaboratively, and while they need to be notified before undertaking certain forestry activities, they are keen to work round concerns in order to enable owners to achieve their aims.

The close proximity of Offa's Dyke Path offers 177 miles of fantastic walking along Wales' border with England, through stunning landscape.

With the River Wye so close, there are many water based activities on offer from canoeing to gorge scrambling if the peace of Harper's Wood becomes too much.

Local area and history

Approximately a quarter of a mile from the woodland, as the crow flies, is The Kymin National Trust, a Georgian roundhouse and Naval Temple in honour of Nelson and the British Navy's battles of the late 18thC, reachable via Offa's Dyke Footpath which runs along the outside of the eastern boundary of the woodland. Built by a group of bon viveurs in the late 18th C as a picnic spot, it still delivers for beauty, views and atmosphere!

Monmouth, sited at the meeting of the Wye and the Monnow (hence Mon...mouth) is a pretty market town with the ruins of its castle, birth place of Henry V, tucked away in a now quiet corner of the town, and many great independent shops, good restaurants and cafes.

Directions

What3words: ///salsa.pencil.helpfully

From Monmouth:

Cross the Wye Bridge in an easterly direction, away from Monmouth (at Haberdasher's School) onto the A466, and continue straight ahead onto Staunton Road (A4136) which then bends to the left. Continue up Staunton Road until it bends round to the right and then immediately take the very sharp hairpin turning on the right, which makes you turn almost back on yourself. Continue along here and follow this road, The Kymin, as it then hairpins left and then takes a 90' bend to the right. After a fairly long straight, travelling uphill, the road takes a sharp hairpin bend to the left. Pull off the road to the right here, on the bend, and park up here. The main entrance gate to the larger woodland Harper's Grove is here, marked by a Woodlands for Sale sign. There is a locked wooden gate and a stile.
