Hornbeam Wood £125,000 Freehold

Description

As befits an ancient woodland, Hornbeam Wood is awash with bluebells at this time of year which will truly be a sight to behold for the springtime months. Alongside bluebells are other ancient woodland indicators; wood anemone and oxalis as well as many other wildflowers, yellow pimpernel, herb robert, celandine alongside ferns of several species. There is a sense of great tranquility to this woodland.

The woodland sits on a west facing slope, although the land undulates throughout, with level areas and none of the land is unduly steep. A public footpath bisects the larger woodland north to south, and serves as Hornbeam Wood's eastern boundary line, and an old track, now a restricted byway for pedestrian use only, runs along the western boundary.

Mature broadleaf, mainly oak but also beech, birch and holly and more unusually a natural stand of hornbeam make up most of the woodland, bar an area of coppiced hazel in the central section.

Towards the southern end of the woodland a shallow gorge splits the woodland with small group of conifer established on either side.

Trees

An interesting and diverse mix of trees here, with mostly mature oak, both Quercus robur and petraea, along with the rarer small-leaved lime - Tilia cordata, beech, some ash, birch, cherry, holly and some areas of coppiced hazel, an ideal sustainable woodland management practice in broadleaf woodland.

There is also one of very few or perhaps the only truly natural stand of hornbeam in Monmouthshire as noted in the SSSI.

Wildlife

Long-established biodiversity is evident here in the quantity of various ground flora, and numerous large, small and tiny entrances to of all sorts of forest creatures' homes abound if you look closely. Birdlife thrives here, including robins, wrens, wood pigeon, woodpecker, treecreepers and nuthatches amongst many other varieties seen and heard over time. The open grassland on the eastern boundary of neighbouring Harper's Wood provides opportunities for spotting kites, buzzards and other birds of prey including kestrels and sparrowhawks.

The woodland is being monitored for dormice with nesting boxes fixed throughout the woodland.

Features

Ancient broadleaved woodland and SSSI status.

Hazel coppice.

Ruins of a small stone building.

Stunning surroundings in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Offa's Dyke Path easily accessible from the woodland. It runs along the eastern boundary of Harper's Wood, the neighbouring woodland.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Access to the woodland is good, directly off a very quiet country road. There is a locked gate at the entrance giving access to a parking area shared between the three woodlands.

A public foopath defines the eastern boundary of Hornbeam Wood, running down the outside of its boundary. This connects to Offa's Dyke Path outside the woodland.

A restricted byway (non motorised use only) partially known as Wyesham Lane at its northern end becoming Duffields Lane, runs along the inside of Hornbeam Wood's western boundary.

Rights and covenants

As is the case for all our woodlands, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the woodland.

Activities

Owning land which is a SSSI comes with some responsibility, but very much within the scope of the normal management of a beautiful bit of ancient woodland. NRW (Natural Resource Wales) is committed to working with owners collaboratively, and while they need to be notified before undertaking certain forestry activities, they are keen to work round concerns in order to enable owners to achieve their aims.

The close proximity of Offa's Dyke Path offers 177 miles of fantastic walking along Wales' border with England, through stunning landscape.

With the River Wye so close, there are many water based activities on offer from canoeing to gorge scrambling when you are ready to venture further afield than the peace of Hornbeam Wood.

Local area and history

Approximately a quarter of a mile from the woodland, as the crow flies, is The Kymin National Trust, a Georgian roundhouse and Naval Temple in honour of Nelson and the British Navy's battles of the late 18th century, reachable via Offa's Dyke Footpath which runs along the outside of the eastern boundary of the woodland. Built by a group of bon viveurs in the late 18th century as a picnic spot, it still delivers for beauty, views and atmosphere!

Monmouth, sited at the meeting of the Wye and the Monnow (hence Mon...mouth) is a pretty market town with the ruins of its castle, birth place of Henry V, tucked away in a now quiet corner of the town, and many great independent shops, good restaurants and cafes.

Directions

What3Words: ///salsa.pencil.helpfully

Cross the Wye Bridge in an easterly direction, away from Monmouth (at Haberdasher's School) onto the A466, and continue straight ahead onto Staunton Road (A4136) which then bends to the left. Continue up Staunton Road until it bends round to the right and then immediately take the very sharp hairpin turning on the right, which makes you turn almost back on yourself. Continue along here and follow this road, The Kymin, as it then hairpins left and then takes a 90' bend to the right. After a fairly long straight, travelling uphill, the road takes a sharp hairpin bend to the left. Pull off the road to the right here, on the bend, and park up here. The main entrance gate is here, marked by a Woodlands for Sale sign. There is a locked wooden gate and a stile, giving access for the public footpath. Hornbeam Wood is the woodland to the right of the public footpath.
