Community Woodlands Projects

One of our main aims at Woodlands.co.uk is to get more people into woodlands, including those people and groups who can't afford to buy their own wood. For the last 2 years we have been running a community woodlands project and in that space of time we have had more than 500 requests from people who wish to use woodlands for activities involving the local community. We now have people who use our woods for children's groups, scouts, forest schools, social forestry, bushcraft courses, woodlands management demonstrations, off-road horse riding organisations, orienteering and coppicing.

As we have received such a large number of enquiries, we have decided to set up a forum to put community groups in touch with other woodland owners who would be interested in allowing their woodland to be used in this way.

Are you a woodland owner?

Below are some of the projects requiring woodland. You may also wish to read our advice on hosting a project in your woodland.

We are Adventure Unlimited; a charity who aim to enrich the lives of children and young people, especially those who are disadvantaged, through outdoor education and adventure. We do this by training unemployed adults and young people to run adventurous activities. We have been using outdoor sites across the South-East for over 30 years. This includes Brook Farm, where we have created a range of activities completely sympathetic with the natural environment and been maintaining the woods for over a decade. The farmer who leases us this land on a peppercorn rent may soon have to sell the land and so we are desperately seeking a new site. This is us: http://www.aultd.org/index.htm We would be very grateful to hear from anyone who would be willing to allow us to use their land, even if only a few times a year. We can contribute a small rent and for more frequent use arrangements, help maintain the woodlands. More details

I am interested in having access to and management of an area of mixed woodland to set up an under canvas forest workshop to try to emulate some of the traditional woodworking crafts like pole lathe turning in a traditional setting as well as creating contempory art from natural materials. I would also like to investigate wild foods and ancient cooking methods. I am a teacher of Design and Technology with qualifications in Sustainable Design and Environmental Studies and I have always had a love of the countryside in all of it's forms. My view is that considered and careful management of even a small mixed wood should have a positive impact on the micro-habitats. Wlidlife in all of it's forms should be considered and accomodated where possible. If possible I would like to involve children and adults in future sustainable woodland projects if the initial experiments are successful. More details

Suffolk

A non-profit organisation encouraging and supporting children and young people to access challenging and adventurous play in the natural environment. We are looking for a small woodland. We would be willing to pay rent for the right space. The idea is to take the activities used in Forest school and other types of fun activities possible in the forest such as camp cooking and environmental art, and use the activities for there play value. There is a drive nationally to provide more challenging and natural play opportunities for children and young people. This project targets children and young people from hard to reach communities. Myself and my colleagues have numerous years of experience in play and youth work, I currently am a senior manager for Cambridge City Council’s children and young people's service, we hold a range of qualifications and all are currently completing our Forest schools level 3 BETC. The project would attract national interest so residentials (small groups camping) could be part of the package that we would offer. More details
