Description
Stoops Wood lies in a secluded corner of the larger Hayton Moss woodland. Originally planted with Scots pine, the woodland has been undisturbed for several generations. This has allowed other species to move in, giving a more natural feel than a standard plantation.
The open spacing of the trees allows a profusion of ferns and bracken to thrive on the woodland floor, with sorrels and mosses carpeting the ground beneath. Level overall, there is a small dip in the topography when first entering the wood, with a corresponding rise along the southern boundary fence.
Located in the midst of a variety of arable and stock holding fields, the woodland is generally quiet and peaceful, allowing the sounds of nature to flow unhindered through the trees.
Trees
The main body of the wood is populated by Scots pine, some of which have reached impressive heights. Holly and birch are well scattered throughout the woodland, with occasional sycamore.
Along the boundaries are crab apple and hawthorn, with a few majestic beech and oak.
Wildlife
Itinerant deer and badgers evidence their presence with narrow pathways through the ground flora. Small poke holes in the moss indicate the entrances to the underground homes of voles and wood mice. Diminutive wrens can often be seen on a low perch as they forage for insects on logs and fallen branches whilst tits and finches occupy the mid-line of the canopy.
Probably our most photogenic native mammal, the red squirrel, is resident within the wood. A local charity is actively taking measures to protect this endangered species and secure its future.
Features
The wood has an excellent hardstanding, ideal for stacking timber before removal. A small path leads onwards beneath the beech boughs to a shady bower with a woodland bench.
Access, tracks and footpaths
Access to the wood from the minor road is via a well-built, hard-stone track suitable for most cars. This is a particularly private woodland, with no public rights of way along the access track or through the wood.
Rights and covenants
The sporting rights are owned and included in the sale.
As with all our woodlands, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the woodland for all
As is the case for all our woodlands, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the woodland.Activities
Stoop Wood is the ideal woodland to engage in small-scale woodland management and conservation.
The ambient peace and quiet encourage time to sit a while and absorb the experience of nature first-hand.
Local area and history
Surrounded by farmland, the wood is an island in the midst of agricultural activity. Small villages like Castle Carrock would have been centres for the community and home to the barons who controlled the area.
Today, Brampton is the nearest town with a wide range of local services, shops, cafes and accommodation.
Overlooking the area are the last hills of the Pennine chain as it dips into the Tyne Valley. An area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) it offers plenty of scope for walking and cycling.
A stoop is a colloquialism for a gate post.
