Community Woodlands Projects

One of our main aims at Woodlands.co.uk is to get more people into woodlands, including those people and groups who can't afford to buy their own wood. For the last 2 years we have been running a community woodlands project and in that space of time we have had more than 500 requests from people who wish to use woodlands for activities involving the local community. We now have people who use our woods for children's groups, scouts, forest schools, social forestry, bushcraft courses, woodlands management demonstrations, off-road horse riding organisations, orienteering and coppicing.

As we have received such a large number of enquiries, we have decided to set up a forum to put community groups in touch with other woodland owners who would be interested in allowing their woodland to be used in this way.

Are you a woodland owner?

Below are some of the projects requiring woodland. You may also wish to read our advice on hosting a project in your woodland.

Kent - Folkestone area

I am looking at setting up a Forest School type business in the Folkestone area. I’m currently a teacher but have been working towards my forest school qualification and children’s yoga teaching. I also recently completed a Wild Beach course (similar to Forest School). I’m looking for a woodland to set up the project and wonder if you had any land I could use for this? It’d be mainly Forest School but I would also like to incorporate some more holistic wellbeing activities in it, such as yoga, earthing, forest bathing. I would manage and maintain the woodland. I look forward to hearing from you. More details

Leicestershire

Hi,I am a qualified child-care practioner and have 20 years experience in working with children.A new Government Initiative states that children are not being given the opportunities to experience the outdoor environment. This has shown to be having an effect on their future Learning and Development.I am extreamely enthusiastic about becoming a Forest School Leader and am in the process of training to gain the qualification needed.I would love to set up a Forest School in the Leicestershire area for children to enjoy exploring and learning about our natural environment, through supervised play activities. These activites will give children, especially those who live in inner city areas a chance to experience and explore the natural outdoor environment.I hope to inspire them to respect and value our beautiful countryside and woodland areas and to gain an understanding of how we can look after and protect its future. (Examples of activites include setting up wild bird watch areas, making bat-boxes,creating areas where bugs and creatures can live, encouraging wild flowers to grow etc.)Respect will be given to the environment and Full risk assessments will be carried out and discussed with the land owner before hand, who will not be responsible for the safety of the children using the area. I am a freelance forest school educator and work in partnership with another forest school level 3 leader. We are looking for woodland in East Devon where school groups could visit for a forest school session. Does anyone have a woodland where children could safely alight from a coach and who would be willing to let us utilise their woods for education? Best wishes Claire Mountjoy More details

Cheshire/Midlands/Welsh border

I'm looking for suitable woodland where I could run Bushcraft courses. The very nature of my work is to educate people to respect nature and how to utilise what it gives us to survive comfortably within that environment. Hence respect for the woodland environment would be of upmost priority. I would be looking initially to run 1-2 weekend courses/month an would be looking to share the profits with the landowner as a % of business which goes through the woodland. I typically looking for something 15 acres and above as I would be moving the "base camp" from area to area as to reduce the physical and visual impact on the woodland. I would require a varied selection of trees and plants and ideally a selection of wildlife in order to educate people on uses of these resources, so coniferous only woodlands would not be suitable for my needs. Thatching for shelter building (Brackon, leaf mould etc..) would be required. Ideally a source of drinking water for customers should be available as well as a place to park vehicles. To give the customers the most enjoyment from educating in this environment road noise/man made noise would be a negative. All insurance would be covered. Fires are obviously a huge part of the teaching that I would be delivering however these would be closely controlled and fully extinguished before leaving the woods. If you feel that you have woodland which meets this criteria please contact me by e-mail, hopefully there is a business oppurtunity there. Best regards Matthew Adams More details
