Would you like to take part in a new Water Survey ?

Buglife, University College, London and other partners have developed a new water survey - part of the OPAL project (The Open Air Laboratories network). It involves identifying a variety of water beetles, testing water pH (acidity / alkalinity) and water clarity. More information at http://www.opalexplorenature.org/?q=TakePartWaterSurvey including downloadable pdf files on amphibian, dragonfly and duckweed identification - which are very good.

For details of the British Waterways' Wildlife Survey 2010 – visit http://www.waterscape.com/wildlifesurvey and perhaps take a look at their wildlife directory http://www.waterscape.com/features-and-articles/features/wildlife/

Entries are invited for the British Wildlife Photography Awards - this year's competition includes a new category dedicated to British biodiversity and native species under threat - this is to reflect the fact that this year has been declared the International Year of Biodiversity - visit http://www.bwpawards.org/ but hurry the closing date is the 4th June.

Incidentally, for those interested in lichens, there is an excellent key to their identification be found here and for a slideshow on the biology of lichens visit - http://www.divulgando.org/ktn/lichens/
